Year 6 B : Weekly Learning Review

 Year 6 B : Weekly Learning Review

Class: 6B    Mr Robert             Week Ending: 28.09.2017
Literacy
This week, we have begun reading the novel ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. We  read the first three chapters in our Literacy and Guided Reading sessions and have answered questions including developing the skill of  inferring information from the text.
In addition to this, we have been expanding our knowledge of figurative language by exploring terms such as ‘metaphor, ‘simile and ‘personification; we will be writing a descriptive writing piece about Camp Green Lake over the next week. Camp Green Lake is a setting in the novel ‘Holes’ and the children are excited to develop their vocabulary in order to write a descriptive piece of prose.
Mathematics
Our first topic in Mathematics has been Place Value. In these lessons we have been looking at multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 and understanding how we calculate these sums. We have looked at how place value works for both Multiplication and Division and have discussed how many spaces, and in which direction, we move the decimal point for each question.
Science
Our topic for this term is Humans and Other Animals. This week, we have been looking at different parts of the human body and attempting to understand that all the parts of the human body work together so the body can work efficiently. We have identified specialized body parts called ‘organs and have discussed as a class which we think are the most important and why.
Humanities
We have been looking at the Romans in our Humanities lesson. As a class, we have discussed who the Romans were; how the Roman Empire started and how they became so big. We have introduced terms such as ‘conquered’ and discussed how and why the Romans conquered other countries. Our main activity this week was to read and understand a comprehension source and fill in a map to show how big the Roman Empire was.
Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship Education
Our topic for PSHCE this term is Healthy Living. We have discussed what we mean by healthy living; how aspects such as ‘diet, ‘exercise and lifestyle can affect how we feel on a daily basis. The students have created a ‘Diamond 9’ chart to outline the 9 most important aspects of healthy living.
